Cayucos, California (June 26, 2019) – 35-year-old Justin Smith of Atascadero has been identified as one of the two employees of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department who were struck and severely hurt by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Cayucos, according to authorities.
The crash happened at around 1:01 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, on Highway 1, just south of Chaney Avenue.
As per the CHP officials, a gray Honda Fit driven by 81-year-old Michael Engelberg of West Hollywood was heading northbound on Highway 1 at about 65 miles per hour when the driver thought he saw the Cayucos off-ramp and steered toward the intersection of Chaney Avenue and Ocean Boulevard.
At the same time, Three San Luis Obispo County Public Works water systems employees were working on a water line in a construction zone at the intersection. One of the employees saw the car and was able to get out of the way in time. Smith and the other employee were not able to avoid the crash and were hit.
The impact propelled the unidentified employee into the side of a residence east of the crash scene while Smith was trapped under the vehicle as it came to stop.
Responding emergency crews transported Smith and the unidentified worker to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo with severe injuries.
Engelberg and his passenger suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash. The passenger was also hospitalized.
